2024 NALMCO Spring Seminar: Controls and Competition in Dallas
April 15, 2024
The 2024 NALMCO Spring Seminar brought us to the Westin Dallas Park Central in Dallas, Texas, March 5-7, 2024. About 120 attendees from all parts of the United States were in attendance, making it a great opportunity for networking and learning from one another.
Learning lab small group sessions focused on a variety of controls topics including:
- Controls Programming Methods
- Controls and Emergency Lighting Code Compliance
- Scalable Lighting Controls
- Lighting Controls: Beyond Basic Energy Savings
Additional topics included:
- Re-LED – Replacing LED Products
- Anchor Bolts – How to Repair & When to Replace
- How to Present Environmental Impact to Your Customers
- Lighting Auditing Tips and Tricks
- The Disappearing Fluorescent Lamps and the Opportunity this Presents
- Advances in Healthcare Lighting
In addition to providing a tour and coordinating learning labs, Spring Seminar host Saylite held a bench top LED lighting retrofit competition for attendees to see who could convert to LEDs the fastest.
The honor went to Sergey Tsushko at TSF Lighting. We are especially proud of his speedy yet skilled performance as TSF Lighting is an EMC Labor Partner.
Training/Certification Updates
In an unplanned moment, I was offered the stage to talk about the benefits of certification—an opportunity I always take! I used this instance to share how it can bolster our workforce and elevate employees to their next level.
I have the same message for EMC Labor Partners: Not only does certification provide a path for advancement, it also creates new opportunities to bring in entry level staff to address the current shortage of trained workers in the trades. Here are two new certifications to note:
Certified Lighting Auditor Certification
While we experienced some delays with rollout, we are in final beta testing and expect this certification to be available this summer as a completely online option.
GUV Certifications
The GUV Apprentice technician and GUV Senior technician are planned to be fully online and the Certified GUV Management Professional (C-GUVMP) certifications are planned to be both online and in person for the practical application portions. To date, 20 people have earned the C-GUV MP certification, including Alex Stange, Mark Thompsen and me from EMC.
The GUV training provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of germicidal GUV-C technology and its effective implementation in their respective fields. Attendees walk away with the knowledge and skills necessary to design, install, maintain, validate proper dosing, and utilize UV-C equipment safely and effectively.
Designed to be hands-on, the C-GUVMP training provides design and layout, safe and effective dosing and practical application that prepares participants for working with GUV technologies in the field. This includes learning how to disassemble, safely clean and set fixture angles—all while on a ladder.

It’s always good to see partners new and old at this event. The 71st NALMCO Annual Convention & Trade Show is October 20-23, 2024, at the Omni Orlando Resort at Championsgate, Championsgate, FL.
