The ABCs of LED Tubes and What They Mean for Rebate + Incentive Savings

Did you know that there are three different types of TLED tube replacements? Most people don’t, but the type of lamp you choose can impact your savings from rebate and incentive opportunities. Here’s what to consider for each of the three types:

Type A

A Type A linear tube replacement is when the old fluorescent tube is replaced with a LED tube, but the old fluorescent ballast is reused. It is one of the most common types of lighting replacements we are seeing right now.

Incentive/Rebate Opportunity: Utilities are not consistent in their approach to offering rebates and incents for Type A replacement. Some utilities will incent this as a lamp replacement, while others will not provide an incentive unless you change out the ballast for a driver (which makes it a Type C).

Type B

A Type B linear tube replacement is an LED lamp replacement that is direct wired into the line voltage and doesn’t have a ballast or driver.

We don’t see Type B replacements often as they are generally reserved for lab or “clean room” environments. They are also the most dangerous of the three lamp replacement types. If not installed correctly and properly labeled as a “direct wire” it could cause sparking or even fires.

Lastly, Type B lamps generally are not dimmable and have a higher installation cost due to the risk factor.

Incentive/Rebate Opportunity: We don’t see incentives and rebates for Type B replacements often, but when we do it is usually for a customized incentive program.

Type C

A Type C linear tube replacement is when both the ballast and the lamp are removed and both a driver and a new LED tube are installed. It is very similar to a fixture change because you are changing out both the lamp and the ballast/driver.

This is the safest of the three TLED replacement options, since the LED lamp is being supported by a driver which is more compatible for LED functions. Type C lamps are also able to use dimming capabilities as well as connect with lighting control systems.

Incentive/Rebate Opportunity: We frequently see incentive and rebate opportunities for Type C replacements. In fact, some utilities will even consider this a new fixture, making it eligible for a greater rebate!
